Key to Varieties
Leaf-blades membranous to herbaceous, middle and upper ones mostly 1,0-1,8 times longer than broad; succeeding cymal internodes equal and pedicels equal or both only gradually reduced in length centrifugally; bracteoles averaging less than 2 mm long; upper calyx-teeth averaging 1,2--2,0 times longer than broad. ............................................var. pallida
Leaf-blades mostly coriaceous, middle and upper ones mostly 1,6--2,3 times longer than broad, attenuate or acuminate; cymes verticillastrate, succeeding cymal internodes and pedicels abruptly reduced in length centrifugally; bracteoles usually averaging more than 2 mm long, upper calyx-teeth averaging 2,1--3,3 times longer than broad. ................................var. coriacea
Key to Varieties
Upper calyx-teeth on a given plant averaging 1,5--2,5 times longer than broad. .........................var. leonensis
Upper calyx-teeth averaging 2,7--5,5(--7) times longer than broad.
- Middle and upper inflorescence-internodes mostly 2--5 mm long, verticillasters tightly crowded, those at any given node indistinguishable from those at adjacent nodes; calyx-tube averaging 4,--6,5 mm long. .........................var. breviflora
Middle and upper inflorescence-internodes mostly 6--10 mm long, verticillasters usually overlapping but distinct; calyx-tube averaging 6,5--8,5 mm long. .....................var. palmerie
Key to Subspecies and Varieties
Bracts mostly 2--8 mm long, inconspicucus and hidden in the mature (blooming and fruiting) inflorescence; bracteoloes mostly 0,5--2,5 mm long, wek and inconspicuous; upper calyx-teeth overtopping lower calyx-teeth by 0,5--1,0 mm. ......................subsp. neomexicana
- Leaf-blades mostly 1,3--1,8 times longer than broad; calyx usually tinged magenta or rose-purple, teeth erect on tube; corolla pinkish purple to magenta. ............................var. neomexicana
Leaf-blades mostly 0,9--1,4 times longer than broad; calyx usually reflexed, especially after anthesis; corolla dull lavender. ................................var. harvardii
Bracts (4--)7--17 mm long, conspicuous in the mature inflorescence, often protruding out between calyces; bracteoles subinvolucral, conspicuous, those of outer 2--5 cymal nodes mostly 3--11 mm long;upper calyx-teeth not at all to slightly overtopping lower calyx-teeth by about 0,3 mm. .............................subsp. pallidiflora
- Calyces at antheseis purplish or magenta over most of length, upper teeth mostly deltoid, 0,8--1,5 times longer than broad, costae in the tube prominent, usually unpigmented and standing out from pigmented tissue; corollas rose-purple, (10--)12--17 mm long. ..........................var gilensis
Upper calyx-teeth mostly 1,5--3,5 times longer than broad, costae of calyx-tube not prominent, usually pigmented much as intervening tissue; corollas 10--12,5(--15) mm long; coloration of calyx and corolla otherwise.
- Upper calyx-teeth mostly 2,0--3,5 times longer than broad, their bases strongly connate, connation angle (200--)250--450, upper calyx-lip not convex, calyx at anthesis rarely anthocyanic, usually green with whitish teeth, corolla white or slightly rose tinged, occasionally pinkish purple. .......................var. pallidiflora
Uper calyx-teeth mostly 1,5--2,0 times longer than broad, theit bases weakly connate, connation-angles 0--30 Grad, upper calyx-lip and upper tube convex, somewhat constricting the mouth, calyx at anthesis tinged dull purple in upper half or green throughout; corolla pinkish purple to white..............................var. greenei
Key to and Varieties
Longest pedicels usually 1,5--2,0 mm long; Secondary costae usually fusing with major costa in upper 1/2 (usually upper 1/3) of calyx-teeth; corolla-tube averaging 8,5--14,0 mm long, limb of median lobe abruptly tapering at base. .......................var. pringlei
Longest pedicels usually 0,7--1,2 mm long; secondary costae usually fusing with primary costa in lower half of calyx-teeth; corolla-tube averaging 6,5--8,3 mm long, limb of median lobe cordate at base. ..........................var. verticillata
Key to Varieties
Cymes usually 5--12-flowered, verticillasters mostly 4--10 mm across (pressed), cymal internodes nearly obsolete, mostly 0,1--0,3 mm long (measured from centers fo adjacent pedicels); calyces mostly 2,5--3,5 mm long with teeth ca. 2 times longer than broad. .........................var. micrantha
Cymes usually ca. 15 flowered, verticillasters mostly 10--13 mm across (pressed), cymal internodes apparent, mostly 0,3--0,5 mm long; calyces 3,5--5,0 mm long with upper teeth ca. 2,5 times longer than broad. .......................var. durangensis
