Since June 1999, 100,000 Roma were brutally forced to leave Kosovo by UCK (KLA) under the very eyes of NATO. They found shelter in camps in Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro. The EU strategy of refugee containment near their "home" works: only 10% found a hole into the "stronghold of Europe", taking high risks. Some were lucky, some used all their savings, some got help from relatives. Most refugees have to survive in the camps in the Balkans under inhuman and life-threatening conditions. Children and old people often do not have the strength to stay alive.

In September 2000, in the camp "Podgorica" there was one latrine and one water tap for 3000 people. Every day the people have to struggle for food; medical treatment and medication are almost never available. Children are cared for by a few idealists. Everybody is afraid of the coming winter and of being driven out once again, as recently happened in Belgrade, where bulldozers flattened a whole camp.
